Mrs Bale quotes Shakespeare
I know from watching The Weather Channel that the US has been hit with incredible snowstorms, but around here it was pretty much winter as usual. Tom had a snow day but honestly there have been worse snows and school wasn't called off. As so often happens, the hype overcame the reality. In all we've gotten about six inches. We may get some more tonight or tomorrow, but honestly most every day if it isn't sunny, we get some snow. That's winter at Windy Poplars every year, and Mrs Bale says the prediction about this particular storm in our area was 'much ado about nothing.'
PS - Can you see Margaret and Matt's house on the far left?!
The same could go for here Mrs Bale. We have had flurries all day but it isn't sticking to the roads even. I am glad all is well in your corner of the world.
ReplyDeleteHI Nan:
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what has happened to us. While other areas surrounding us did get more snow, for us, it is just another typical winter day. In fact the sun is even gracing us some rays at the moment. For three days, we listened as the weather people have almost hourly, warned us this might be the blizzard to top all blizzards, the storm of the century. I think however I shall have to agree with the lovely Mrs. Bale on this one, it was all "much ado about nothing".
Happy to know the storm treated you so much more kindly than it did us! For such a small state, ours has an awfully broad range of weather!
ReplyDeleteThe same can be said for our area and I feel like we dodged the proverbial bullet.
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures, especially the icicles!! I'm glad I'm here down South! I had enough snow when I lived up North! That is so neat that you can see your daughter and son-in-law's house from yours!!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Margaret and Matt, how are they doing in their new home? I've thought about them and imagined their excitement through their first Christmas and now first winter in the log home. I hope they are well and happy.
ReplyDeleteYou New Englanders are hardy folk, Nan! LOL
ReplyDeleteI already knew that. I, on the other hand, am a wimpy Texan and it is way, way too cold here right now. We are even supposed to have some snow on Thurs/Fri. I hope not. We have no kitchen!!
Today, it has been between 17 and 25 (right now). Parts of Texas are having power outages so the emergency power grid has gone into play and Austin is sending power to other parts that don't enough - Dallas/Ft Worth probably. Because of that, we are having rolling blackouts - 45 minutes of no power and then 15-20 minutes of electricity and then repeat. Over and over and over. I'm about to go bonkers!!
Our storms have been pretty well living up to the hype. My husband on the hill was told not to go to work, and here in Cambridge the Harvard Museum of Natural History where I was planning to see the famous Glass Flowers was closed. The whole Museum!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful snowy pictures! And over here in England the snowdrops are coming up!
ReplyDeleteYes, I spot their house! How cool is that to have them within view! Love it! Great shot through the window, with the icicles.
ReplyDeleteIt was not as bad here as they predicted either, but is is always a difficult call for them.
Glad I was home today:)
Stay cosy and warm!
Joanne
We were supposed to get a lot more snow than we did. However, it's COLD! Subzero temps with even colder wind chills. But no more snow for at least 10 days. That's a good thing. We're snug and warm in our little house with plenty of food, music, books and House, M.D. dvds. What more could you ask for?
ReplyDeleteNan,
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. As usual.
I can't imagine living in a winter wonderland all season long like you. The 10" we received yesterday halted life here since our local municipalities don't own enough snow removal equipment to clear the roads. Tomorrow is Day 3 of school closings.
But being such a homebody, I've no complaints. Tonight we're suppose to drop to zero. Brrrr.
Hi Nan, I miss your "Nan's making coffee header" though this one is nice too. Your snow looks so fresh and clean and undisturbed. Quite beautiful, actually.
ReplyDeleteWe're in deep doo-doo here in New Jersey. Though my brother in Montclair, which is east of us, says he's gotten more snow. In fact, he says that in the 20 years he's lived in that house, he's never seen so much snow.
We've had it worse here by me, but tonight it's the pits. There's a layer of ice on everything. So the snow and ice have hardened into concrete. The guy next door has been trying to get his car out for an hour. It is making the most hideous noises.
Dog or no dog, I'm not going out tonight. I've already fallen once, thank you very much.
I'm staying inside with my little Rocky boy, and he can use his training pads. (I hope.)
Good reading and blogging weather. :)
But what is it doing in the channel??
ReplyDelete'the weather over the English channel is fine and clear, tea will be served in 8 minutes...'
ReplyDeleteAs time goes by..... It's very popular in the USA. We watch reruns over and over again.
Yes, we had pretty much the same hype about a snow storm that never really happend two weeks before Christmas. We did have snow, true enough, but then that's South Germany for you in winter - perfectly normal!
ReplyDeleteThe house is visible, yes - and it is so nice to know its story, thanks to your blog!
Much ado about nothing was right for us too! We enjoyed a snow day though.
ReplyDeleteSame up here! It was nasty last night but nothing out of the ordinary. We got 20 cm. Today it looks like a snow globe - big fat fluffy flakes drifting down.
ReplyDeleteI thank each of you for your great comments. I love hearing about everyone's weather. And I hope that the actress Janet Henfrey knows how beloved her character, Mrs Bale is!
ReplyDeleteKay, I can't believe it's that cold in Austin!! I hope my kiddo gets another snow day tomorrow. I hate the thought of her driving in the Dallas Metroplex in nasty weather.
ReplyDeleteStay warm.
Thanks for letting me chat with Kay on your blog, Nan. ;)
We here in and around Chicago got the storm as predicted, though it didn't quite break the record of 1967, which, I am old enough to say, I remember quite well. Today, we awoke to 1 degree temperatures, but, it was a sunny day and the snow was pristine and we are used to it, as are you.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are lovely, Nan. It is nice to see Mrs. Bale, as well.
It must be pretty cozy to look out your window and see smoke rising from their chimney :)
ReplyDeleteSusan, they don't have a chimney! It's all gas heat that vents out the back of the house.
ReplyDeleteOh - I don't recognize that picture of Mrs Bales (although she looks as if she should be quoting Shakespeare on the weather) -- I'm hoping that it means there's an episode of "As time..." that I haven't seen yet. (Although I'm happy to watch reruns>)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your storm was much ado about nothing.
Nan -- I wanted to thank you for the rice muffin recipe a while ago. I made it yesterday, with vegetalbe soup -- so yummy. Thanks.
Sallie, I believe it is the episode when Jean and Lionel get married. I own the whole series on dvd, and a lot of the Mrs Bale pictures are ones I've taken off the tv so they aren't perfect by any means. :<) Do you know this site:

You will love it.
So glad the muffins were good.
I was thinking this week that I sometimes miss the deep blue shadows of sunshine on snow that are such a part of New England winters.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the milder Kentucky winters are just fine with me at this stage of my life!
How disappointing! *Only* six inches of snow.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite funny from a Florida perspective, though I love snow and wish I could see some this winter. Glad it was no big deal for you.
I have yet to work out who this Mrs Bale is? Can someone please enlighten me? Or have I missed the joke entirely?
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
Morning's Minion, there really is nothing so bright as the winter sun around here!
ReplyDeleteJ.G., it is very pretty outside these days!
Margaret, Mrs Bale is a character on the television series As Time Goes By. She is very interested in weather. :<)
Do you mean the programme with Dame Judi Dench? I didn't watch many of those, so if it is the same programme, small wonder I missed Mrs Bale!
ReplyDeleteMargaret, yes! She works at the country house. I own the whole set of dvds and have watched them over and over. I adore the show.
