Today's pictures/raised beds and dogs in snow

Here is a surprise benefit of having raised beds - the dogs don't go in them in the winter and leave little unwelcome offerings. Just as in the summer, they walk between and around but never inside.

And here are Ben and Sadie playing in the snow.

  1. Lovely pictures! The weather was a little like this over here a few weeks ago - yet now the snowdrops are coming up.

  2. Ben and Sadie are having a good time in the snow. I don't have raised beds in the garden but it is amazing how good Luna is at keeping out of the flower beds. Not totally but in general she stays on the paths. I can tell the difference when Vinny comes to stay. He runs everywhere.

  3. Nan, doggies so love to play in the snow, don't they?

  4. The dogs look like they were having a grand time!

  5. Snowdrops! I can't imagine, Katherine. We have weeks (months!) of drops of snow yet. :<)

Lisa, I really like the raised beds. I was reluctant for so long but am a convert. I look forward to going out this spring and planting!

Pamela, Ben and Sadie spend most of their time indoors these days with an occasional jaunt out in the fields.

Webster, Ben and Sadie do for short spurts, and then they come sleep by the woodstove. :<)

    Sherri, they were!

  6. Lovely! I really miss snow sometimes (that said, I hope it remains calm up there for the next two and a half weeks when I head up there for a visit).

However, your raised beds in winter made me REALLY miss my former vegetable garden with its raised beds! One day again...

  7. I always love photos of gardens in winter; you can really see the "bones" of a place!

  8. Nan, I'm thinking about going to raised beds this year but my husband is concerned about mowing around them. Do you allow enough room between them for a mower or have something on the ground like gravel so that you don't have to worry about it?

My daughter is now living in DC and waiting for the blizzard to begin!

  9. Who could resist dogs in the snow! I can't say our Senior Dog is very good at staying off raised beds - she always drops her stick or ball there when we're working, because it seems more convenient (to her) and then she has to walk on the bed to retrieve it.

  10. And Catherine, for me, I couldn't live without this cold and snow and bright, bright sunshine. There's something about winter sun that is unlike the rest of the year. Must be the reflecting off the snow. And of course no leaves to filter it. Just amazingly sharp and clear and beautiful. I'm so a cold weather girl.

Karen, I agree. It begins in November around here and lasts through April so it's a good thing I like those 'bones.':<)

Pam, we put ours in the former vegetable garden so three sides don't have grass. But the sides on the lawn are much easier to take care of than they were when the garden edge met the lawn. You can mow right up to the boards. Tom has even used the rider mower and it still works.

Geranium Cat, what an adorable sight that must be. I so love dogs.

  11. We're getting snow again! It looks so pretty, doesn't it? I'm a little weary of the cold, but spring is just around the corner.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a second dog for Annie to play with. But our house is so little and I'm not sure I could deal with the extra demands of a second dog. And would we be blessed with another calm, gentle animal or wind up with a rambunctious, needy dog? Annie isn't the most playful dog, so maybe she wouldn't even like sharing her home with another dog!

  14. Gosh, I miss the magic of how different everything looks in the snow!

  15. I am going to try raised beds this summer - do you put a layer of anything between the regular earth and the added earth/mulchy stuff?

  16. Thanks, Diane! I was so amazed to find that old cover. I have it framed in my house.

J.G. ah yes, and we're getting some more today. This is all I've ever known for wintertime weather.

Susan, our situation was different because we put them right in our vegetable garden. The soil inside came right from the old garden. We just added some old manure which we always did to the other garden. I'm sure there are sites online or books that could give you the info you need.
