Library Loot/October 9

Hosted by Eva and Marg.

Although I'm already reading two books, when I saw this today on the new shelf at the library, I had to bring it home. The Case of the Missing Servant by Tarquin Hall is, I hope, the first in a new detective series. Vish Puri is a private investigator in Delhi, and the book begins with him 'devouring a dozen green chili pakoras [the book has a great glossary] from a greasy takeout box.' He has been advised by his doctor to stay away from such foods, as he is now fifty-one years old and his blood pressure is up. 'Puri considered the doctor's stern warning as he sank his teeth into another hot, crispy pakora and his taste buds thrilled to the tang of salty batter, fiery chili and the tangy red chutney in which he had drowned the illicit snack.'

The food is irresistible to him and this book is irresistible to me!

  6. I've heard about this one. Hope it's good. Let us know. The pakoras sound delicious. I love Indian food.

BTW, I have an ARC of the new Vicki Delany book to come out next month, WINTER OF SECRETS. It's book #3. Are you reading those as audiobooks? Anyway, you want it after I'm through. Not sure when I'll get to it but probably before too long. :-)

  9. I adored this book and I've been experimenting with my own version of rajma, based on the description in the glossary. Still haven't quite got the spices quite right but my failures have been quite edible. Enjoy!

  10. Thank you everyone for taking the time to leave a note. I began the book last evening and it is really, really good. The picture he paints of modern day Delhi is amazing. The changes that have come in the past several years in both population and culture are astounding. Mr. Puri's work reflects these changes. I am fascinated.

And Kay, YES! Merci. I am not listening but definitely can't wait to read this. Remember how Vicki D. wrote and said the heroine in danger aspect would be different in this book?

  11. I'll send it off to you when I get to it, Nan. I'm reading the 3rd book in Stieg Larsson's Swedish mystery series right now. I couldn't wait for it to come out here. Ordered it from Book Depository.

I've been looking forward to Book 3 of Vicki's series as well. I really like the setting.

I finished Geraldine Brooks' MARCH yesterday for my book group. Have you read it? The setting made me think of you. Well, the New England part anyway.

  12. Hi Nan,
no comment under the great Tom Rush so I'll put it here - I love him and that song but you know I never heard him sing it! Only Joni Mitchell. Thanks for such a great treat.

  13. Kay, I bought the first in the series for Tom and he is reading it now. I've been told by a good friend that it is not a book for me. :<) Take your time with Vicki's book. I have lots of books waiting for me.
I didn't think I was interested in March.

Susan, I'm not sure what you mean about 'no comment' - do you mean there was no place for you to comment? I've gotten a couple, and left a couple myself in response.
You know, I don't think I've ever heard Joni sing it. Tom's version is the only one I've known. Such a wonderful song, such great words - real poetry.

  14. yes, weirdly when it comes up for me there is no space underneath the Rush song to comment... who knows the quirky ways of blogger?

  15. Gosh, Susan, I got four comments, and I see the comment thing on safari, camino, and firefox. There are so many things I don't understand about computers. :<(
