Today's picture/Susy's chair

Doesn't Susy's chair call out to you? We spent Memorial Day Sunday on this deck listening to birds, eating great food, and enjoying the company of wonderful friends.

  1. Ah, a place in the sun to go with your Mary Oliver poem. How perfect!

  2. It is perfect, June... but not at my house. If you click on 'Susy's' you will see what a gorgeous place this woman has! It is truly an oasis of calm beauty.

  3. Perfect! I need another wooden chair just like that. One for me and one for a friend :)

  6. Call Me Madam, do they sell Adirondack chairs over there? Do you ever see them? There's a mail order place here which sells them, but the postage would probably be horrendous. But here's the address, just in case someone dropped a bag of money at your house :<) -

I know, I know, this is way more than you wanted. :<) But just in case...

  8. Hi Nan,
I have to love a chair like that since growing up I was a Suzy :)
(I now claim Susan but my sister still calls me Suzy as did my Mom and Dad...).

  9. Really kind of you, Nan, thank you! I think you can get them here but they're very expensive. Now I've seen that one though, hmm, perhaps I could treat myself.

  10. I love Suzy and her chair! It makes me want to sit and watch the world go by...in the garden or on the beach...
I love the photo of Suzy and her grandson. I was expecting her grandson to be a child and not practicly a man so much taller than her.
I love pictures like that. It's like just a glimpse into a moment that time is so quickly turning over. Almost like the perfect words or quote in a book that you read through quickly. And, then you stop and go back to re-read because suddenly you realize what an awesome thing that was and you want to try to save it for later. But you can't.
That's why I love the photo's of older generations and the generation that is coming into adulthood. It happens so slowly that you hardly notice it. Your photo of them walking...It's like you see time walking down the path with them...frozen for just a moment.
O.K. that is deep enough for me...I'm confusing even myself! :)

  11. What a lovely day you all had, thank you for sharing it.
I will be interested to read what you think of The Maytrees if you post on it.
Hope you are having the same glorious sunshine we are having her in the U.K.

  12. Staci, the weather here has been so off and on. Cloudy, rainy, windy, sunny - and then it begins all over again. Tom calls it an 'old-fashioned spring' :<)

Susan, Susy's 'real' name isn't even Susan. I don't know how she got that nickname. Rather like my late aunt 'Susie' whose real name was Mabel:

I love childhood names. When someone calls you by one, you know that person has known you a long, long time. :<)

Call Me Madam, I would certainly say to go get one! It will go perfectly with your new home. Just the ticket for sitting outdoors and reading. :<)

Hip Chick, this was so beautiful. I just loved what you wrote, and it wasn't a bit confusing. I understood and I love what you 'got' from the photo. It gives me shivers. Thank you.

Carole, if you read above, you'll see our spring hasn't been just sunshine by any means. :<) So far, so good on The Maytrees. The only thing I don't like is dashes for quotation marks.

  15. I always did wonder what an Adirondack chair looked like, often come across it in books, now I know, very nice, not what I had imagined at all.
Also wonder what an Afghan is, I imagine it to be a crocheted rug, but I may be way off.
This language thing is endlessly fascinating.

  16. I would love to have a chair like Suzy's - maybe even a whole row of them in a variety of colors! I saw very weathered pair once at a local thrift shop, but ended up walking away. I've regretted not getting them ever since - I don't think I'll ever get over it!

I love how the armrest allows enough room for a cocktail! Reminds me of Les's Adirondack Margarita recipe. :)

  17. Kay, if you were closer, I'd drive over and bring you to mine! They are on the porch this sunny morning.

Carole, I'll email you a picture of my mother's afghan!

Alison, last year I had a blog header with one of my A. chairs, and will probably have one again this year. I just checked and it was June 9- the perfect time to be sitting in one, and yes with a cocktail. :<)

  18. Thanks for your comment on my post. I love to listen to Click and Clack. I have been pretty lax lately in reading and writing posts. I have to get back into the swing of it. Your blog is always so beautiful.

  19. Violet Lady, what a very nice thing to say. Thank you. I haven't written or read much myself. May was so, so busy!

  20. Lovely! I have always had a thing for adirondack chairs, but have never owned one. I might just have to get one this summer and plant it down in the lower level of our yard, near the bird bath. I think periwinkle would be a good color choice, don't you?

Sounds like a wonderful day. I've been an absent blogger for almost two weeks. I've been busy puttering in the yard, planting annuals, scrubbing the porch, weeding and simply enjoying life. It's been a good break.

  21. Les, and the amazing thing is that they are very comfortable. Do you remember Teri reading a big, big book sitting in one? The arm is large enough to hold a book. And the other one can hold a drink! I have two which you may have seen on the blog once or twice. They are a bluish/green. My May has been awfully busy too.

  22. Lovely chairs, Nan. And how interesting about Revolutionary Road.

  23. Thanks, Susie. Have you read RR? Or seen the movie?
