April
by Sara Teasdale (1894-1933)
The roofs are shining from the rain,
The sparrows twitter as they fly,
And with a windy April grace
The little clouds go by.
Yet the backyards are bare and brown
With only one unchanging tree -
I could not be so sure of Spring
Save that it sings in me.
Oh I've never heard that one before. It's a perfect description of April.
ReplyDeleteThank you, hc. I really love this poem, and really, all her poems. If you are interested, type her name into google.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very lovely poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI like her hat...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely picture. Love the poem too.
ReplyDeletePatrice and the two Kays! Thank you. I love her little poems. Their cheeriness often belies the sad life she had, ending with her suicide.
ReplyDeleteFunny that you shared that poem. I am just [1 day ago] seeing the greening up of the lawns. And I am so ready!
ReplyDeleteMare - I did a little raking this morning! Great feeling. It's raining now but that should hasten the greening, right?!
ReplyDeleteI love Sarah Teasdale, thanks for the poem. Is that a photo of her too?
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question on my blog, yes-please.
Yes, it is ST, Cait. And you are in the draw!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I LOVE the sheep in your header photo! Is she yours?
ReplyDeleteThis is the second time in a week I've run into a Sara Teasdale poem. They are both lovely. Why haven't I thought of her since high school? I love your selection and this final verse from my friend,
ReplyDelete"Here in the moving shadows/I catch my breath and sing . . ./My heart is fresh and fearless/and over-brimmed with spring.
thanks for the reminder.
I loved this! Sent it off to my brother in Michigan who's having a particularly long, bleak, gray winter. Thanks for sharing. Hope springs eternal!
ReplyDeleteEvaberry, Thank you! yes he is ours. a wether.
ReplyDeleteCommonweeder, I just love her poems!
Mindy, I'm so pleased.
It does sing, doesn't it, even when all evidence seems to be to the contrary.
ReplyDeleteProbably it sings a bit sooner where you are now, Colleen!

ReplyDeleteI just discovered ST a few years ago, and really enjoy her work.
ReplyDeleteOops! I'm the author who just deleted her own comment, because of a typo and also I found out the name of the poem I refer to.
ReplyDeleteI have always admired Sara Teasdale, right down to her poetic name. Did you know that the most volatile and passionate poet Vachel Lindsay was crazy in love with her, scaring her to death?
Always loved "Spring Night," with its haunting description of night, and the line "Why am I crying after love?" among many others. Thanks for sharing this one I didn't know!
I haven't been by for awhile, but saw that you stopped by my blog. I love Sara Teasdale -- she was always my favorite and I have a few of her books of poems. She was my mother's favorite, too. Thank you for sharing her poem with us.
ReplyDeleteViolet Lady, that's so neat that your mother read her work. I'm very new to her poems but I like them so much.
