First raised bed

Today our new gardening adventure begins!

To make the raised bed Tom bought three 2x10 spruce planks, 8 feet long. He used the full-length boards for the 8 foot sides and cut one in half for the ends. We smoothed out an area and placed the frame; then we dug soil out of the garden where the walkways will be and filled the frame with the soil to make the raised bed.

Inside are transplanted chives, pansies which Tom's mother gave us, Bloomsdale Long Standing spinach seeds and Dwarf Jewel Mix nasturtium seeds.

  1. Oh, they are scillas aren't they? I have some under my window, they are finished now for us, but the thrill when that wonderful blue opens itself to the world is very deep.

  3. What a pretty picture at the top of the ol' blog today. It was a beautiful day, wasn't it? But I just looked at the temp in the kitchen and at 9 PM it was 78 degrees. Too hot! I guess the storm windows will have to come out soon.

  4. HI Nan: I am sure your raised beds will be a success. We have not been able to make a start on our garden yet, as the weather has been too cold. Our seed potatoes are all lined up on our dining room window, ready for the garden, so hopefully within the next week or so, they will go into the ground.

  5. I like the idea of raised beds - for the knees and back relief as well as the look of it.

  7. Hooray is right, Kiirstin!

Yes, Carole, they are scillas! What a great color. I don't have snowdrops or crocuses - these are the first color in my garden. And the daffs just blossomed today!

Lisa, me either! The second one is going in right now.

Hip Chick, I love combining flowers and vegetables together.

KSV - ain't it the truth! We go from cold to hot. :<) It was boiling in our bedroom last night.

Those potatoes must look beautiful, Donna! I love potatoes.

Susan, I've already found that to be true yesterday putting in the plants. It was so easy to not have to travel down a row bent over at the lower back. I really like the idea of contained work like this. The bed is easily accessed by all sides.

Mindy, it is a great time!

Karin, do you eat your nasturtiums? They are very cheerful!
