Housework/Front Door

For a long time now, we've had this whimsical notion to have what we call a "Tomie dePaola" door. Do you know his work? He is a wonderful writer and artist, and we just love his colors.

As you can see from these "before" pics I just took this morning, we are in dire need of repair and renewal! Years of dogs scratching to come in; window pane knocked out when Tom dragged the old tub surround down the stairs. Almost a year ago (!!) we bought a replacement storm/screen door, and now the time has come to put it up and paint.

Here is a book cover to give an idea of what we are thinking of - probably a turquoise door with purple trim.

  1. Oh, I think it would be wonderful! And what a lovely house you have, Nan.
On a separate ♪ I love the Albrecht Dürer painting that's hanging on your wall. I'm really fond of that one as well as The Little Owl he painted. Just something about them ....

  2. Sounds like a wonderful color scheme, Nan. Those colors will look pretty and cheerful in any season. Whenever I see houses with doors such as yours I think to myself "Must be a pleasant, friendly person living there!" :)

  3. I love a brightly colored front door. The Episcopalians and their red doors are a good inspiration;)

  4. Thanks Colleen and Alison! We're pretty excited. Colleen, that rabbit print has the distinction of being (and I think I'm right here) the only thing that has never been moved in the 27 years we've lived here! Alison, I love your thought. A whimsical thought to go with a whimsical door!

  5. Look forward to seeing your new door and am loving the photos, especially the top one. Your two bottom windows have such beautiful trim. The little pieces in the corners of the windows just add loveliness. The front porch looks so pretty from a distance. And you look ready for winter. I see many comfortable winter days ahead with good reading materials!

  6. Nan Your color scheme is great.
Your home reminds me of my daughters home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. They believe it has just sold. They have lived there 20 years. My 2 grandchildren now at Vanderbilt here in Nashville and my soninlaw an attorney in Tampa. So she will be relocating in Tampa. A big change. Empty nest, new location and new home.
