Today's poem - August by Elizabeth Maua Taylor

August
by Elizabeth Maua Taylor

August rushes by like desert rainfall,
A flood of frenzied upheaval,
Expected,
But still catching me unprepared.
Like a matchflame
Bursting on the scene,
Heat and haze of crimson sunsets.
Like a dream
Of moon and dark barely recalled,
A moment,
Shadows caught in a blink.
Like a quick kiss;
One wishes for more
But it suddenly turns to leave,
Dragging summer away.

  3. This poem just says it all. How quickly August passes. I'm in a panic at the thought of summer disappearing and all I have not accomplished yet.

  5. Marie and Barbara, I just thought her words described August so perfectly. Not the first days or even first couple weeks, but by now, it just seems to be going by quickly and "dragging summer away." Isn't that a great phrase. I had never heard of this poet before this poem.

  6. Thanks for the comment on my blog! Yes, while we do have a cold climate, we also have lots of snow. I think I get away with growing "borderline" plants because of the insulating snow. Check out http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hzm-ne1.html for the USA zone info for your area - maybe bee balm would grow in a sheltered location.
