Cows used to be pas...We have trails like this too. Cows used to be pastured on our property and their trail-walking habit actually formed some little one-cow-wide "terraces" on the back hill. There is a level trail pounded out by hooves (hoofs? lol!) over time, carved out of the steep slope of the hill.
