The trees didn't produce a good crop every year, but often enough. We gathered them into old sap buckets, from there they were dumped into grain bags.
The butternuts in particular went very well in a batch of brown sugar fudge.
This was in Vermont--in the 1950's.Morning's Minionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01912356455981434029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049626897935912366.post-47936856323522419482011-11-02T14:26:35.428-04:002011-11-02T14:26:35.428-04:00And I'm so glad you are enjoying them, Colleen...And I'm so glad you are enjoying them, Colleen! Being a town kid, I was always a little jealous of what sounded like a fun experience. I got to see calves being born, played in haymows, and helped bring the cows in for milking during summer visits, but somehow always missed going nutting in the fall.Lynnnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049626897935912366.post-20180959915415465042011-10-31T17:58:06.933-04:002011-10-31T17:58:06.933-04:00HKatz, why did I think you were in DC??

I just saw Barbara's comment and...Hello, again. I just saw Barbara's comment and thought I'd add my two cents worth since we have been in the process of "nutting" around here. We've have a bumper crop of walnuts.

I, too, thought it odd to roll over the nuts with a car, but, desperate to get the nuts out of the lawn and hopeful for a few to eat, we tried it this year. Sure enough, it worked like a charm, cracking the tough, outer husk and allowing us to ease it away, exposing the inner shell, which, surprisingly, remains intact. After washing and letting the shells dry for several weeks, cracking open the shell reveals perfect nuts inside.

We both grew in appreciation at how labor intensive harvesting walnuts is. I don't normally refer back to my own posts when commenting, but, I have a few pictures on my blog at:

lifeonthecutoff.wordpress.com/2011/10/20/harvesting/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049626897935912366.post-22175947577442053472011-10-31T16:21:52.830-04:002011-10-31T16:21:52.830-04:00Beautiful as always, especially this: There is alw...Beautiful as always, especially this: There is always one moment in a day when I think my heart will break.

Autumn is my favorite season, and I also love autumn-flavored words and images, so posts like these are a treat.

As for the recent snow storm, it was mostly cold rain here in Philly, with a few small patches of snow left over in the morning.HKatzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17653570160517335758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049626897935912366.post-54798780842039440422011-10-31T16:17:38.452-04:002011-10-31T16:17:38.452-04:00I kind of chuckled myself, Barbara.
