Gladys was a writer, and her friend did most of the gardening which was just for them. They didn't make a living off the land. So their perspectives were not the same. Gladys knew the local people but she also knew quite a few famous people. <br />I hope you plan to write about the books. I wore out a small paperback copy before finding several other editions to give to friends.
