Saturday Sally/May 18

Sally: a brief journey; an excursion or trip.

Two wonderful authors were on the Diane Rehm show recently. She is my favorite interviewer. She really listens without interrupting, and truly cares about the people she talks to.

You may listen to the programs with

Maya Angelou (which is pronounced low not lou - I didn't know this) talking about her new memoir, Mom & Me & Mom here.

and

Edna O'Brien talking about her new memoir, Country Girl here.

And for this week's third stop on our sally, a wonderful video of an older woman and her old car. My father sold Packards a long time ago.

  1. Yay, let's hear it for older women! Sadly, I couldn't access the clips (something to do with being in the UK perhaps, but it could be my ineptitude with computers). However, I thought your post was a lovely celebration of three women of courage, character and great spirit. Maya Angelou is one of my heroines, and I love her autobiographical books, and the way she has always stood up for the things she believes in, and how she is able to forgive people for the awful things that happened to her as a child. Edna O'Brien is another iconic figure, who broke new ground with her novel The Country Girls and was unafraid to explore issues that people didn't even acknowledge, let alone talk about in public. It's easy to forget just how shocking the book was considered to be when it was published. And as for the 101-year-old driver, all I can say is wow, what an amazing lady.

    1. Oh, I love what you wrote! I'm sorry you couldn't listen to the shows. I haven't read either author, but I so loved listening to them talk. And yes, may we all be driving at 101!
And it's yay for older men too! The winner of the Preakness is 50.

  2. Love this post, esp. the video. I wish I had a Packard to drive around! And to be still driving at 101, what a blessing.

  3. I like Diane Rehm very much as well. I missed the Maya Angelou interview and will listen to it on my IPAD; thanks for the reminder. I did hear the Edna O'Brien one... we were driving, running errands and pulled over to hear the end of it.

    1. Have you read either author? I find that even if I haven't read a writer's work, I still very much enjoy listening to, or reading, an interview with them.

  4. Thanks for that clip of the Packard Nan - I ran it to show my husband..... and we were both taken aback by the driver! 101 and long may she continue to thrive. Thanks for finding the clip and making it available on here for us.

    1. Wasn't that just the best! She is still alive and well as of March! I should do a followup post on her.
