Today's picture(s)/Oranges

Today is the last day of fresh-squeezed orange juice until next winter. This is one of my great seasonal pleasures. My mother always squeezed fresh orange juice, and I have followed her example all my life. I wrote about the first day of the season a few years ago. And the juicer also made an earlier appearance on a 'Tools of the trade' post. This year I couldn't find my beloved Temples, but I made do with Minneolas and Honey tangerines. In addition to the delicious taste, the oranges offer a burst of color in the kitchen as I look out at a white landscape.

  1. You're back! My gosh - I didn't know until I wandered in. Knew it the moment I saw the header photo!

  3. Oh Nan, so happy you are posting again:) You are one of the first that I started reading about 4 years ago. Love the Tulips. I had some that color and brought from my other home to this country home. Maybe some will bloom

  4. Oranges are my favorite fruit but I eat them out of hand rather than juice them. Honey tangerines are so good, I'm salivating at the thought of them. I didn't like the taste of any fruit when I was in treatment last fall but I've been making up for lost time since then.

  5. Navel oranges are usually $6 for a 4lb bag here but lately they've been as low as $2 for the same size bag and the quality has been great. I'm going upstairs right now to have some oranges after seeing your photo!

  6. Yum! I love to make fresh juice with my juicer, but do not have a citrus juicer. I love that you have "seasonal pleasures." :)

    1. I love my old-school juicer. I have tried electric ones, but this is my favorite, and the same as my mother used.

  7. Lovely tradition and yes, a nice shot of color with this dreary white stuff still out there in places!

  8. Yum! I love fresh-squeezed orange juice. Is there a reason you choose not to juice year-round?

    1. By now the Florida oranges I like to squeeze juice from are no longer available. Their season is the first three months of the year. In NE, do you have California or Florida oranges or both? We have some CA but they are all navels. The juice ones come from FL. And though you can still find bags of 'juice oranges,' they are just not the same as the ones for sale those three months.

    2. I think we have both, but to be honest, I've never much paid attention. I'll let you know after my trip to the grocery store this afternoon.

    3. Food preferences are so interesting. You don't pay attention, and I know all the oranges by name. :<) And you know a million meat/fish things that I'll never know!

  9. We are sad at the end of the Florida orange season too...we bought them from local farm stands, a thing that still amazes me. Strawberries are almost over here ... still some good fresh picked vegetables ... soon pretty much the whole season will be over. Before it even begins up north.

    1. It makes me shake my head in wonder. Think if one could travel around following various crops. Wouldn't that be fun?!
