Quotes du jour on the Fourth of July/Twain and Bombeck

Many public-school children seem to know only two dates: 1492 and 4th of July; and as a rule they don't know what happened on either occasion.
Mark Twain

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.
Erma Bombeck

  1. Love these quotes. The first because it says that the elders always worry about the new generation and second because she is so right. Thank God even though we are considerded a police nation for so many we don't act like it at home.

    1. There is great comfort in knowing people have always thought about the things we think about now. :<)
Outside impressions of all countries are so often unlike what life is like in those countries- daily life, regular people.

  2. Both these quotes are so very perfect. Twain's comment, however, is sadly too close to the truth. I've always loved Erma and plan to overeat a little bit today.

  4. Love Twain, but come across that quote before - set me thinking about English dates, and I guess the only one most people know with any degree of certainty is 1o66.

    1. It probably won't surprise you that 1066 is as familiar to me as 1492. :<)

  5. Great quotes. I love Erma! Time to re-read her books that I've owned for a few decades. :)

Happy 4th to you! We had guacamole and chips with beer out on the front porch. The pup is "drugged" and we're counting the hours 'til bed, so she'll settle down. But first, ice cream!

    1. How very lovely.
Now, Sadie doesn't blink at fireworks or thunder, both of which were in the area last night. But a windy day terrifies her. Go figure.

  6. I hope you're having a Happy Fourth. I love the Bombeck quote - so true. Her description reminds me of eerie videos I saw recently of North Korean military parades, where the people marching look like puppets being jerked by invisible strings (and I'm not even going to get started on Nazi Germany...)

  7. Great quotes, Nan, both ring with truth. Hot here. Terribly hot with little rain and there will be large scale failed crops this year. Still, we were lucky to have a tasty supper and a frosty beer. Hope you had a good 4th.

    1. So cool today that the windows are closed. It seems to rain most every day. Very sad about crops.
Wish I liked beer. It is so cool, with so many different kinds and logos. :<)

  8. Mark Twain was such a wonderfully curmudgeonly old guy, wasn't he? Great pictures of both authors, too. Happy belated 4th! We celebrate our Canada Day on the 1st of July in much the same way with backyard barbecues and fireworks. But don't ask me anything about the history behind it ;)
