Today's song/Pink Moon - Nick Drake

Tomorrow, April 6, 2012
3.20 pm EDT (where I am)
Full Pink Moon
This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring.
I have also read that:
The pink moon, according to Chinese tradition, is the bearer of doom. In Chinese, and other cultures, a pink moon, or blood moon, is caused by a lunar eclipse and is a harbinger of a coming catastrophe.

And here is Nick Drake's Pink Moon. It is impossible for me to imagine that dear boy being almost 64. He's been gone so long.

I saw it written and I saw it say
Pink moon is on its way
And none of you stand so tall
Pink moon gonna get you all
It's a pink moon
Hey, it's a pink moon
Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon.
A pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon.

I saw it written and I saw it say
Pink moon is on its way
And none of you stand so tall
Pink moon gonna get you all
It's a pink moon
Yeah, it's a pink moon.

Nick Drake (1948-1974)

Addendum: I actually offered a blog entry of this song five years ago, also on the occasion of April's pink moon, but those were the days when the music I posted came from blog radio. It is now defunct and none of the songs from them on my blog work anymore. Now we have the wonderful you tube with pictures or live performances of music - such an improvement. Because of this, I felt it was okay to repost his beautiful song.

  2. I had a New Year's goal to try for a full moon shot and post every month but that goal was among the many blogging ones that went by the wayside. Your post is better than mine would have been anyway, thank you for sharing and, in fact, for the reminder to at least get outside and look tonight. Sometimes I even forget that part.

    1. I've only done a couple over all the years of the blog. My camera just records a little white circle. :<)
Not true at all about post being 'better.' There's no such thing because we all write as we are feeling at the moment. I've been rather lost in a Nick Drake world for a day or two.
As for blogging schemes, check this out:

I'm pretty sure I did not continue this grand plan!

  3. How I did not hear of Nick Drake until your post is beyond me, Nan, but I'm glad you posted this beautiful song. The words and the guitar playing are so emotive. I'll be back, I know, to hear it again.

    1. Well, your note makes me so very glad I posted his song. There is a lot about him on the internet. There are you tubes of his songs, part of a movie on his life, as well as a lot of writing about him and his work. A much loved man, and that love is tinged with the sadness of his early death. There are just three albums. More here:

  5. Nan, I've never heard of Nick Drake either. He looks so very familiar to me, though, so I wonder if there were any of his albums in my childhood home. My mom was very hip in the 60s, listening to Bob Dylan, Carole King, Cat Stevens, The Beatles, etc., so it's entirely possible. Thanks for the introduction!

    1. He wasn't all that well known, and in fact was kind of a 'cult' favorite until the VW commercial in the late nineties. He is one of those singers who is 'rediscovered' by each generation. His work has a timelessness.
