At this moment

It's been ages since I've done an 'at this moment.' You may find out more about what it is at the very first posting, and the others may be found under Letter Topics on the sidebar. If you are so inclined, please join me in this little exercise in awareness.

At half past noon in the middle of September.

What I saw: the view from my rocking chair as I looked up from my current book, A Fortnight in September.

What I heard: the humming of the dishwasher and the dryer.

What I smelled: just the slightest waft of wood smoke from the woodstove. We've been burning it for a few days now.

What I tasted: the cheesecake with strawberries I just ate.

What I felt: the warmth of the woodstove.

  1. Lovely!

What I saw: The Seurat print, Sunday Afternoon on the the Island of La Grand Jatte, which hangs on my office wall. It contrasts well with the paperboard cutout of a black cat holding a trick-or-treat bag that lives on the back of my door during the off-season.

What I heard: In the background, the whir of the building's air conditioning system. In the foreground, Peter, Paul, and Mary perform from the speakers of my computer.

What I smelled and tasted: Peanut butter. It's lunchtime.

What I felt: The aforementioned a/c blowing frigid air.

  3. I can see why the dogs look so comfy...what a warm and inviting room. Thank you for sharing your moment:)

  4. I can't wait for the first fire in my wood stove! October is usually when it happens. There's nothing like heating with real wood. You get to back up to a really hot fire AND it smells wonderful! Enjoy!

  5. I love these. I must steal (oops - borrow) the idea some time!

  7. Your house is beautiful and your 'at this moment' sounds perfect! What a wonderful life you lead! I am jealous because you live in New England and get to experience the beautiful autumn there...you are so lucky!

  8. That looks like a lovely place to sit with a cup of hot tea and a good book. It has been too warm for us to burn wood yet, but there are four cords waiting to be stacked! Your dogs and cats look very content.

  9. Sound perfect! Your house looks so inviting; especially with those cuties there on the floor!

Thanks for the heads up about The Kinks post. I showed it to Mike! He loved it!

  10. How very inviting...from every sense! I should try this one day.

  11. Your room is so appealing! I imagine your whole house is as well. I like his writing exercise.
Sadly all I see tonight is a messy house and a tired me feeling a bit overwhelmed lately.
    But you are an inspiration.

  12. Lovely. I think I want to experience all those senses (except perhaps the sound)

  13. Oh, it looks and very nice and cozy. Our weather is still a little warm to be thinking about wood smoke.

By the way, I have a book giveaway going for North American readers. I would have for you to miss out if you are interested.

  14. Sprite, thanks for letting me look through your eyes. When I took a quick look at the comments yesterday, I thought, 'oh, isn't that great, she's playing PP&M.' I hadn't yet heard that she had died.

    Pamela, oh yeah!

Sherri, I love it, too. It is my favorite thing in the whole house. I bought it a few years ago. It doesn't have the sifter inside a cupboard, but that's just as well since I have more storage room.

BookPsmith, and the very next moment, the dogs got up and laid down in the hall in the space the cat had just vacated. Nothing lasts. :<)

Debbie, we love burning wood. It is plentiful around here. There's a great quote about wood heat from Anne of Green Gables I put up on the blog in the very early days:

    Scriptor Senex, please do!!

    June, it was very peaceful.

Oh, Rachel, the house needs so much work. I've got to do some entries about the ongoing (or not-going) work. It is very beautiful in the autumn, but I sure wouldn't mind being in your part of the world any time of the year!

Lisa, thanks for coming by. I finished my book yesterday, and it was great. I'll write about it soon, I hope.

Laura, yeah, they have a tough life, don't they?! :<) So glad Mike enjoyed it!

JoAnn, please do! I mean to put one up more often.

Susan, as I wrote to Rachel, my house is not so great right now. It's been a long time since work has been done, and we are trying to do it ourselves (well, mostly Tom's self) and it takes a long time. I don't feel much like an inspiration. :<)

Stuck in a Book, it's funny but I like the sounds. I like the humidifier in winter, the fans in summer, and the dishwasher too. The dryer, not so much. It isn't an expensive one, and is quite noisy as is the washer.

  15. Thomas, it has been in the 30s at night and 50s during the day around here lately! I'll be over to checkout the giveaway!

I love your living room, it looks so relaxing and comfy. What breed are your dogs? They look like big sleeping babies lol. This picture makes me feel like we had a moment of togetherness for the afternoon, if only :o)

  19. Blessed with four, what a nice thought! The dogs are both mixed breeds. If you'd like you may read more about them:

The picture is actually of part of the kitchen. Just to the left of the white cupboard is the electric stove.

  20. Such a meticulously clean house! I especially like the blue walls.

  21. Wow, Paul, the wonder of a picture! And I didn't even photoshop it. This house is not meticulously clean. I vacuum once a week, period. I have all the animals in the picture, plus another cat. We live on a dirt road. We have a farm. :<) And the kitchen needs painting desperately.
