Dusty Springfield - audio and video

This afternoon I heard a terrific show on the radio about Dusty Springfield. If you missed it, and are interested you may listen here.

And I love this performance.

  1. Wasn't she wonderful? Thanks for the reminder.

  2. Thanks for the link. Dusty was one of my favourite singers and I've managed to give her a couple of mentions in my books. Her version of that definitive love song, 'The Look of Love', was the original, and despite hundreds of covers, remains the best.

  3. I loved Dusty, wanted my hair to be like hers, it never was!
What a tragic life she lead, but what lovely music she left behind. Thank you for the clip.

  4. Oh, sniff, that's my favourite. At Dusty's funeral (black horses and carriage) they played those opening bars as the cortege arrived at the church door. Not a dry eye anywhere. Ooh, I just found the story here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/295552.stm
Can it really be 10 years?

  5. I loved your notes. If you have a few minutes, I'm sure the four of you would really like the radio piece. I didn't realize it was on yesterday because it was the tenth anniversary of her death. Martin, which books mention her? Carole, the one and only time I've ever worn makeup was in my white lipstick and black eyeliner phase. Thanks, of course to Dusty. I hadn't known till yesterday that she is the one who started it all. Call me madam, thank you for that link. I just went and read it. The author and book featured on the radio show is:

Dusty!: Queen of the Postmods by Annie J. Randall

This will be one of my first purchases when I'm back buying books!

And Maureen, she was really, really wonderful. If you go to you tube, you'll find lots of videos. I almost included the Italian fellow who wrote You Don't Have to Say You Love Me (in Italian of course) - Pino Donaggio singing it. It's worth checking out.

  7. I just noticed wonderful Eudora on your sidebar. I never knew her birthday was just six days after my own!! I shall toast her 100th this year!!

  8. Pamela, I agree. If you have a chance, you'll really love the radio show. I learned a lot.
As for Miss Eudora, I have a few books on the shelf I haven't read, and thought this would be a fun time to read them. And one of our best friend's birthdays is the same as yours, my Aries friend.

  9. Oh--deer! Lots and lots of deer. We haven't seen that many on our property for quite a few years.

  10. Wow ... great voice ... but remember those hairstyles?!

  11. Margaret, a few started showing up, and then we began feeding, and then it became a daily event. They come in different configurations - sometimes 1, 2, 3, 5. The most we've had at one time is 8. We both feel it is magic. They appear so suddenly, so surprisingly, and then leave the same way. We just love having them.

Bella, I remember trying to tease my hair! If you have a chance to listen to the radio show they talk about how she was the trendsetter for all of that.

  12. If we woke up to find all those deer in our garden, Edward would have to be hospitalized!

  13. I love your deer photo - I've never been able to photograph them! I wonder what they are eating?

  14. Pamela, we just cracked up reading your comment! It's a good thing Ben and Sadie can't see them. :<)

Alison, we are feeding them deer feed! I talked about it a little bit here:

  16. So glad you liked it, Cait. The radio report is excellent if you have a little time.

  17. Thanks so much for that terrific video. Imagine - a singer who could actual sing, who could put her heart into a song and be utterly convincing.
    She was great.

  18. Roberta, in the radio link they talk of where her physical motions come from. It's a fascinating piece. She really was great.

  19. Oh how I love this song! I'm listening to it at work and it is REALLY hard not to belt it out at the top of my lungs (as I do in my car ...)

I also loved Son of a Preacher Man as a kid (I'd sing it with all my cousins on family car trips) which is funny considering that my father-in-law is an associate pastor. ~LOL~

Wishin' and Hopin' is another great one ...

(you'd never know I was only in my 30s if you judged me by the music I love!)

  20. Heather, I think if one really loves music, you love it from lots of periods. I had some Django Reinhardt on the other day and a woman of 27 said she thinks she was meant to sing in those days. And my son loves stuff from all times, as do I. The latest music I bought from iTunes? Bix Beiderbecke!

  21. Dear Nan - Thanks for this. I watched the YouTube video AND listened to the WBUR Dusty show then went to iTunes and bought two Dusty S. songs - she has always been there in the background but your post put her in the spotlight and made me realize how much I have always liked her music. While I was at it, I bought a couple of songs by Adele, who seems to me to be the singer today who is really carrying on in that DS tradition.

  22. My absolute favourite Dusty Springfield song, although I loved the songs she used to sing as part of a group as well. I *think* they were just called 'The Springfields', but it's a while ago and my memory is not all it was.

Amazed at how much snow you still have there, Nan.

  23. KSV W, I am so pleased that you listened. Wasn't that a great show. I learned a lot, and it was a treat to hear her sing. I've been visiting iTunes myself, trying to decide just which album I want to buy. There are quite a few, and I've been having fun listening to snippets of them. I've been meaning to buy Adele for a long time now. A young friend left a message on the phone recently and said, Nan you've got to buy Adele! I think Amy is excellent, too, but I feel her language will prevent her from getting the lasting acclaim. I'm still startled to hear certain terms in the midst of her beautiful music and singing. :<) Not a prude, but I just don't think it is necessary.

Cath, it was The Springfields. If you go to the radio link, they talk about this a bit, and about her name change. I have been very touched by the warmth of the responses to this post. As for the snow, some years we've had even more at this point of the winter. Gorgeous, gorgeous days we've had lately, with rain expected soon which will wash away those piles formed by the plow.

  24. Layanee, I've been singing it all week. :<)

  25. OK Nan, I am back, listening to Adele and reading your blog when I should be in bed! By Amy you mean Amy Winehouse? I like her too, but as a DJ on the Point said recently, of all the current crop of blue-eyed English soul singers (and I like them all [Duffy] too) Adele just lays it down - no big sound, no producer's tricks, and no celebrity flashes. Not that we all don't enjoy walls of sound and fashion statements, but one gets the sense that Amy's wheels are spinning way too fast and are going to come off at any moment and Duffy has the whole looks package and not so much talent. I think Amy and Adele went to the same London school... The whole phenomenon of these young singers emerging is sort of amazing. See ya!

  26. Thanks KSVW. I loved reading this. I bought Adele yesterday, but haven't listened yet.

  27. Thanks for this, Nan! I listened to the whole thing and learned a lot. She was quite a scrapper, wasn't she?

  28. Chartroose, I'm so glad you had time to listen. Lots of interesting information.

  29. I grew up in the 60s here in the UK and absolutely loved her voice......
