Gingerbread

This is the only gingerbread recipe I've ever made. It comes from an old cookbook that made its appearance in the very early days of this blog.

I'll serve it with whipped cream that comes from the best cream (scroll down a bit on the page to read about it) I've ever, ever tasted.

Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar to 1/2 cup soft butter, creaming till light.
Add 1 egg and 1/2 cup molasses. Beat thoroughly.

Sift together:
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Add dry ingredients to butter mixture alternately with 1/2 cup boiling water, beating well after each addition.

Bake in greased 8x 8 pan at 350º F. for about 40 minutes.

  1. I bet your house smells divine! I wonder how adding a little lemon to the cream would work - the one time I had gingerbread cake it was served with a lemon sauce that was incredible, and I know how you've said you like lemon!

  2. Thanks for commenting Alison. I've actually used lemon curd as a topping and it was great.

  3. Now that I stop to think about it, I haven't eaten gingerbread in years. Maybe I need to make some for the holidays.

  7. Nan, I am going to make this!!
But no wonderful cream like you describe in my area.
Have a great day. It is pouring rain in Nashville.

  8. This is EXACTLY the same recipe I use! I made one for my son, husband and I (which was gone in two days), and another for a tea party my Aunt had. She asked me to cut it, which I did into 16 pieces. She then proceeded to cut each of those into thirds. Sigh...no wonder she's totally skinny, and I'm wishing I were more so.

Anyway, I agree: it's the best! I also like it with homemade applesauce, or if you want to get decadent, whipped cream on top.

  9. I love gingerbread, with real whipped cream and also with a caramel or lemon sauce. Yum!
